Fruity Flies

We've had this little problem at our house this week...little tiny fruit flies -- EVERYWHERE! I don't know where they are coming from. I have cleaned the countertops a billion times each day, thrown away all slightly ripe fruit, taken out the garbage and kept the garbage disposal clean. So, I looked up getting rid of fruit flies and tried a couple of the techniques. Last night we had the vinegar/beer in a bowl with holes poked in saran wrap, the wine bottle (luckily, we got to drink the wine first!), and the banana peel in the oven. Last night there was NO luck on the collection of the fruit flies...I thought it was all a hoax. This morning, I woke up and found 7 fruit flies in the vinegar/beer bowl -- they crawled in the holes poked in the saran wrap and then couldn't get out!! I know, very inhumane of me, but I need to get rid of these peskly little flies. What if we had a house showing and all these little flies were everywhere -- how embarrassing! It looks like the flies are gathering around the bowl -- now, how can I get more of them to get in there and die?

Also, pour massive amounts of bleach down your sink drains. Seriously. They breed in there. I did this when we had the fruit flies BAD once, and it truly worked. But be sure to reapply the bleach after using the sink so as to kill any eggs that may survive or new eggs. BLEACH. It works.

I've had this too. It makes me feel like I have dirty house even though I know I've been cleaning and cleaning trying to get rid of them! Argh!

Agree w/ Tracey. Do all of your sink drains. That's what did it for us.

This is so helpful!

If you just left the bowl open with no plastic wrap on it, would they all just go in there?

...I know, too easy.

But I'm intrigued by the bleach comment. I'll give it a try!

The bleach down the sinks works really good, and so does the beer.
I used to be a bartender and every summer we got fruit flies so bad. At the end of every shift we would pour beer in a deep glass, making sure it was all around the edges and everything and the next morning there would be tons of them floating.
